By Invitation & Application

Among the most selective tutoring networks in the world.

A Step Ahead Mentors works exclusively with students and graduates of 25 of the world's leading universities — and accepts only a small fraction of those who apply. If you're among the very best, we'll bring you serious students, pay above the market, and handle everything else.

The Offer

Why tutor with ASAM

Earn above the market

Our tutors earn considerably more than they would on mass marketplaces or through university tutoring schemes. We charge a premium and we share it — because we want the best, and we want them to stay.

Real students, brought to you

No advertising yourself. No bidding for work. No building a profile and hoping. We match you with students whose needs fit your background, and we make the introduction.

We handle the admin

Scheduling, payments, and parent communication run through us. You're never chasing anyone for money or managing the awkward conversations. You teach; we do the rest.

A network, not a directory

You'll be one of a small, selective group of tutors from the world's best universities. Strong tutors with good outcomes are offered more work, higher rates, and the chance to move into admissions consultancy.

Our Standards

Who we're looking for

We keep our network deliberately small. We would rather turn away a hundred good tutors than admit one who isn't right for the families we serve. To be considered, you should be:

  • A current student or recent graduate of one of the ASAM 25 — this is the bar, and it is not negotiable.
  • Able to teach at least one subject to a high level — GCSE, A-Level, IB, or admissions (Oxbridge, US college, UCAT/BMAT, and similar).
  • A genuinely exceptional communicator. Academic excellence is the entry requirement, not the differentiator; the tutors we accept also inspire.
  • Reliable, professional, and able to commit to students over time.

We read every application personally, and accept only a small number. If that sounds like the kind of company you want to keep, we'd like to hear from you.

Compensation

What you'll earn

From £40–£60 per hour, depending on subject, level, and experience — with higher rates for admissions and specialist work. Senior tutors who take on consultancy engagements earn significantly more.

You're paid for every session you teach, promptly, with no deductions for “platform fees” beyond what's already built into your rate.

The Process

How it works

01

Apply

Complete a short application — your university, subject(s), level(s) you can teach, and a little about you. Five minutes.

What we're looking for

  • University affiliation — one of the ASAM 25.
  • Subject specialism and the levels you can teach.
  • A brief note on your teaching approach.
  • Your availability, even if approximate.
02

Verify & interview

We verify your university enrolment via your university email and, where relevant, documentation, and have a short conversation to understand your teaching and your strengths.

We don't take shortcuts on this — it's what our families trust us for.

What verification involves

  • Email confirmation via your university address.
  • A short video call — usually 20 minutes.
  • No formal assessment; we're looking for character and clarity.
  • DBS check guidance for those working with under-18s.
03

Get matched

When a student fits your background, we make the introduction with a short brief. You're never sent a stranger and left to work it out.

What a match brief looks like

  • Year 13, preparing for Oxford History entrance.
  • Needs support with essay technique and source analysis.
  • Three weekday evenings available.
  • Family based in Singapore — all sessions online.
04

Teach & get paid

Sessions are scheduled and paid through our platform. You teach; payment follows automatically.

How payment works

  • Sessions logged through our platform.
  • Payment processed automatically — no invoicing.
  • Settled within 7 working days of each session.
  • No surprise deductions beyond your agreed rate.

FAQ

Common questions.

Do I have to be a current student?

No — recent graduates of the ASAM 25 are welcome, and often in high demand for admissions work.

How much work will I get?

It varies with demand and your subject, but we only grow our network in line with the students we have. We'd rather keep our tutors busy than sign up more than we can support.

Can I tutor around my degree?

Yes. You tell us your availability and we match within it. Most of our tutors fit teaching around a full course load.

Are sessions online or in person?

Primarily online, which means you can teach students anywhere in the world. In-person may be arranged case by case.

What subjects are in demand?

Maths and the sciences, economics, and admissions support (Oxbridge, US college, UCAT/BMAT) are consistently sought after — but we match across all major subjects.

What's required before I can start?

Verification of your university place, the right to work in the UK, and — because we work with under-18s — an enhanced DBS check, which we'll guide you through. Safeguarding is non-negotiable for us.
